Description
What is XYMOGEN Methyl Protect?
Methyl Protect is a comprehensive formula designed to support optimal methylation and maintain healthy homocysteine levels that are already within the normal range. It contains five key nutrients involved in homocysteine metabolism: folate (as calcium folinate and Quatrefolic® for increased bioactivity), trimethylglycine, and vitamins B12, B6, and B2. These five nutrients, provided in their activated forms, enhance methylation and promote overall cardiovascular health.
What are the benefits?
What is Methylation?
Methylation is the process of adding a methyl group—consisting of one carbon atom and three hydrogen atoms—to proteins, enzymes, chemicals, DNA, or amino acids like homocysteine. This process is fundamental to numerous biochemical pathways and plays a crucial role in cardiovascular health, neurological health, eye health, muscle health, bone health, and maintaining redox balance. Additionally, effective methylation is important for the biosynthesis and breakdown of catecholamines, such as epinephrine, which is vital for healthy adrenal function.
What is in XYMOGEN Methyl Protect?
Folic Acid (as calcium folinate and 5-methyltetrahydrofolate) –This B vitamin plays crucial roles in detoxification, nervous system function, breast tissue health, prenatal development, and converting homocysteine back to methionine. In its active form, folic acid acts as a donor of methyl groups. By providing a combination of calcium folinate and 5-methyltetrahydrofolate (5-MTHF), this formula enables optimal utilization of folic acid by bypassing metabolic steps to achieve bioactivity. In fact, 5-MTHF is the form into which the body must convert all other types of folic acid before they can be used effectively. In this formulation, 5-MTHF is included as calcium folinate and Quatrefolic®. Quatrefolic® has been shown to have greater stability, solubility, and bioavailability compared to the calcium salt forms of 5-MTHF.
Trimethylglycine (as anhydrous betaine) – Trimethylglycine is found in various human tissues and serves as an alternative methyl donor in homocysteine metabolism. Additionally, it may act as a preventive agent against the activation of NF-kappaB.
Vitamin B12 (as methylcobalamin) – Cyanocobalamin, the form of vitamin B12 commonly found in many supplements, must be converted in the liver to methylcobalamin, which is the form included in Methyl Protect. Vitamin B12 is another methyl donor, and research suggests that it helps maintain healthy homocysteine levels that are already within the normal range, both on its own and in combination with folate.
Vitamin B6 (as pyridoxal 5’-phosphate) – The coenzyme form of vitamin B6 is its main active form and plays a critical role in around 100 enzymatic reactions in the body. Research from the Framingham Study indicated that there is an inverse relationship between homocysteine levels and a good status of vitamin B6, as well as vitamins B12 and folate.
Vitamin B2 (as riboflavin 5’-phosphate) – Riboflavin 5’-phosphate, the primary coenzyme form of vitamin B2, plays a crucial role in various oxidative reactions. It interacts with folate to help maintain healthy homocysteine levels that are already within the normal range. This support may be achieved by enhancing the catalytic activity of the enzyme methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR). Notably, this effect may not be influenced by the MTHFR genotype.
